What is a regitered dietitian and how do they differ from a nutritionist?A registered dietitian or registered dietitian nutritionist (RD/RDN) is a regulated health professional with specific advanced training in nutrition. Requirements include completion of an accredited university bachelor and/or masters degree, completion of a one year clinical dietetic internship, and successfully passing the national boards examination. RDs are required to undergo ongoing professional development and continuing education. Being a 'regulated' profession means RDs are required to uphold evidence-based standards of practice and ethical responsibilities for the safety of their patients and clients. Titles such as 'nutritionist', 'registered holistic nutritionist' and 'certified nutritional practitioner' etc. are not equivalent to 'registered dietitian'. There are no specific education or practicum requirements for these titles and therefore virtually anyone can refer to themselves as such. Unlike registered dietitians, nutritionist professions are not regulated by colleges to ensure safety of practice. With that said, there are some knowledgeable and experienced nutritionists out there. While we strongly endorse working with a registered dietitian, especially if you have a medical illness, the choice is ultimately up to you based on your preference and how you work together towards meeting your goals.
